Will David Bell GS 91 be the new vice president for campus life?News broke earlier Tuesday that Bell, the dean of the faculty at Johns Hopkins, is leaving to take a position at Princeton next fall.
Bell earned his master's degree from the University in 1987 before receiving his doctorate here in 1991.
The position at Princeton was "too good to pass up," Bell told the Johns Hopkins Newsletter.
So what position is that, exactly? We're not sure yet.
But we do know the University announced last Thursday that its first vice president for campus life, Janet Dickerson, will retire at the end of the academic year. Dickerson oversees the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, the Department of Athletics, University Health Services, the Office of Religious Life and the Pace Center.
UPDATE: No VP slot for Bell, it turns out. The Hopkins dean will become a history professor when he arrives on campus next fall, Bell said in an interview. Jury's still out on who will replace Dickerson when she retires next June.

Why would a Dean of the Faculty be hired to replace a VP of Campus Life? That doesn't make sense.
David Bell is a historian who specializes in 18th-century France and will probably occupy the position left vacant by Robert Darnton's departure for Harvard.
I hope she is replaced with someone who has a strong student affairs/student services background (versus academic affairs).
