Confessions of an Affection Starved Frosh

By Morgan Jerkins '14

Those long Saturday afternoons watching “Legally Blonde” and “How High” have totally corrupted my view of college life. Sure, I knew that Princeton was not a University of Miami or even a Penn State, but all these diverse (and dare I say good-looking) men who come from all over has ignited within me a fiery and unbridled optimism that maybe….just maybe my luck in the romance department would change.

One Saturday night, I conversed with several underclassmen girls who slightly drooped their heads down low and slouched their postures once the topic of boys came into the discourse. We hypothesized that Princeton men are too busy with their problem sets to notice the additions standing right in front of them. But being the open-minded person that I am, I decided to interview two men. You be the judge.

1. Do you consider yourself socially awkward?

Freshman: Not really. I could be far worse.
Sophomore: In some ways, I’m not terrible but I’m no James Bond either.
2. Was interacting with the opposite sex a goal of yours in coming to college?
Freshman: A goal?...In terms of a relationship, I don’t plan on it per se. But I expect it to crop up eventually.
Sophomore: Not specifically. Girls are nice, open, social: It is actually the guys that are more difficult to connect with.

3. Did you date in high school?

Freshman: Not often, but occasionally.
Sophomore: No. Too much of a distraction.

Sure the pressures of precepts, lectures, internships, and JPs can be overwhelming, but the girls seem able and willing to accept the challenges of balancing an academic and romantic life. Have the men become too focused on facts and the future that we are missing out on the illogical emotional adventures that may be waiting by our dorm doors?

Interesting. "I can't get a date...clearly it's the men's fault!"

"Somewhere along this winding road of life, women have become perilous diversions who have the power to send men and their orderly systems into inescapable dimensions of hellish chasms."

How did you get into this school? You can't write. At all.

Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude to anyone, but how are you going to disrespect someone and be anonymous? If you really want to put her writing skills down, then why don't you get on here and write something? With an attitude like that sweetheart, you won't make it very far in life. I mean, you could have at least rephrased it or something. You just found a random sentence you didn't like and make an ignorant comment. ANONYMOUSLY. Really? Is that what people do now? Step your game up before you start something you can't finish. Thank you.

PS even if this was done as a joke, you truly hurt my friend's feelings, and that's not cool. At all.

Writing for the Prince is not for the faint of heart. You will get ripped to shreds every time. Don't take it personally and don't get upset by one person's comment.

You can't offer effective or productive criticism. At all.

You interviewed just two men! There are many, many couples all around campus. Sometimes they even get a little obtrusive with their PDA. As for the freshmen, look around a little and you'll see them making eyes at each other. Since you've kept the identities of all the people in this post secret, and since I don't even know about how you are as a person, I can't say just why those guys are like that and why these girls aren't getting any. I'm sure there's a good reason. Princeton has a surprisingly attractive student body and the people here certainly go out - even the 'nerdier' ones.
